What to expect with your AEO Website Upgrade.

Patients are asking ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity who to see — and acting on the answer. This upgrade rebuilds the parts of your site those systems read, so your practice is one of the names they can confidently give.

Here's what that looks like from your side of it.

We're glad you're doing this. Your practice gets a second front door — named inside AI answers, on top of the search visibility you've already built.

The short version

Two to three weeks From today to finished, with your site live and working the whole time.
Nothing needed from you We'll reach out only if a question comes up about a service, a provider, or your hours.
Your site will look the same Most of the work is structural and sits behind what visitors see. That's by design.
Some new sections you can edit Question-and-answer content and a few additions, yours to change whenever you like.
Visibility builds gradually AI systems refresh what they know on their own schedule, over the weeks that follow.

Why your site will look nearly the same

Search engines and answer engines both read your site, and they reward different things. Google ranks your pages so a patient can choose one. An AI reads those same pages, pulls out the facts, and rewrites them into a single answer. Strong search rankings are one of the biggest reasons an AI trusts you enough to name you — so this work builds on your SEO rather than running beside it.

A page can look beautiful to a patient and still be hard for a language model to use — because the practice name never appears in the same sentence as the city, because the answer to a question is buried in paragraph four, or because key facts exist only inside an image or a script that AI crawlers don't execute. Fixing that means changing what's underneath, not what's on top.

What we're changing

The bulk of this work is development: the structure of your site and the new index files that tell AI systems what's on it. Three layers, sorted by how much of each you'll be able to see.

Layer one  ·  You won't see any of this

Back-end files and markup

  • An AI index file at your root domain

We add llms.txt — a plain-text map of your site written specifically for AI crawlers. It states who you are, where you practice, what you treat, and which page covers what, in the format these systems parse most reliably. Think of it as a directory handed to the crawler instead of making it guess.

  • Expanded structured data on every key page

JSON-LD markup describing your practice as a dental business, each provider as a named professional with credentials, each service as a defined procedure, and each question-and-answer block as a formal FAQ. This is the difference between an AI inferring that Dr. Smith is a dentist and being told so in a format it can't misread.

  • Crawler permissions

Your robots.txt is updated to explicitly welcome the AI crawlers that matter — GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. Many dental sites silently block these by default or leave them undeclared.

  • Heading structure and page hierarchy

We correct the underlying heading levels so each page reads as a clean outline rather than a pile of styled text. Models use that outline to decide which passage answers a question. On most sites this changes nothing visually and a great deal structurally.

  • Retrieval and rendering fixes

We make sure your important content exists in the page source rather than appearing only after scripts run, tighten canonical tags and sitemaps, and add image alt text and clean metadata. AI crawlers take a page largely as they first find it, so content that isn't immediately reachable is content that doesn't get counted. These same fixes help your Google rankings.

Layer two  ·  You'd have to look for it

Wording adjustments

We've studied closely what AI systems look for in a page and what makes them confident enough to name a practice by name. That research informs a set of small, deliberate adjustments to the verbiage already on your site — how facts are stated, where answers sit within a passage, and which terms appear alongside each other.

Individually these are minor edits. You would have to read carefully to spot them. Collectively they change how legible your practice is to a system that reads your page and rewrites it into a one-paragraph answer.

Layer three  ·  You'll see this, and you can edit it

New content on the page

  • Question-and-answer sections

New blocks on your key service pages answering what patients genuinely ask before booking — cost ranges, insurance, how long it takes, whether it hurts, who's a candidate, what the first visit involves. Written to be quoted directly by an AI, and useful to the patient reading them on your site.

  • Expanded service and procedure pages

Where a service is currently a sentence on a list, it gets its own properly built section or page describing what it is, who it's for, and how you approach it.

  • Provider detail

Credentials, training, years in practice, and areas of focus stated plainly in your bios. This is the material AI weighs when deciding whether to describe you as qualified for a specific procedure.

  • A practice facts section

A compact, scannable block of the things patients and AI both look for: location, hours, insurance, financing, languages spoken, accessibility, whether you're accepting new patients.

What happens, week by week

Expect the completed upgrade to be live within two to three weeks. Your site stays up and fully functional the entire time — the changes go on live in stages, and nothing goes offline.

Week 1

Audit and draft

We crawl your site the way an AI does, find what's missing or unreadable, and write the new content.

Week 2

Build

Markup, index files, and crawler permissions go in. Wording and structure changes are applied page by page.

Weeks 2–3

Test and confirm

We validate the structured data, confirm crawlers can reach everything, and let you know it's live.

We won't need anything from you to get started. If a question comes up about a service, a provider's credentials, or your hours, we'll reach out — otherwise the next thing you'll hear from us is that it's finished.

What to expect once it's live

Give it time. AI systems refresh what they know about a practice on their own schedule, so expect changes in how you're described to show up over the weeks following launch rather than the day after. The structural work is permanent and keeps paying off as those systems re-read your site.

If you'd like a baseline to compare against, ask a few of these tools now — before we begin — who the best dentists are in your area, and save the answers. It's the simplest way to see the difference later.

The new question-and-answer sections are yours to adjust. Edit them at your leisure whenever an answer changes, or send any change you'd like made to webchanges@identitydental.com and we'll take care of it.

What won't change

  • Your design, colors, and logo
  • Your domain and web address
  • Your existing pages and photos
  • Your hosting and email
  • Your forms and booking links
  • Your Google rankings — this work supports them

What isn't part of this upgrade

This is a one-time website service. Two related pieces work differently, and both are worth knowing about:

SEO and AEO content optimization is ongoing, and it's already included at no additional cost with active SEO service — every article and page we produce for you is built for both Google and AI search.

The Off-Site AEO Authority Upgrade is a separate monthly add-on for SEO clients. It builds the independent, third-party validation AI leans on when deciding who to recommend — because your own site saying you're the best doesn't count as a vote. Ask us if you'd like details.

Questions before we begin?

Reach out any time. We'd rather answer a small question now than have you wonder for three weeks.
